Catherine’s father
suffers a severe stroke, leaving him apparently completely paralyzed. Before he dies, Catherine and Vincent come to
see him in his hospital room. Catherine
tells her father of Vincent and Vincent promises to love and protect Catherine
until his last breath. At the funeral
she reads a selection from The Velveteen Rabbit. Unable to deal with her grief alone, she asks
Vincent if she can come Below. While
there, she and Vincent discuss the possibility of Catherine permanently living
in the tunnels. One night, the spirit of
her father visits her in her chamber.
After the encounter, Catherine realizes that now is not yet the time for
her to move Below. Before she returns to
her world, she thanks Vincent for his loving support and understanding with a
kiss.
