Hidden Treasure!

You are about to read a wonderful “lost” scene from B&B. It was written by Linda Campanelli and Shelly Moore, but it was never filmed. Over time, certain characterizations, as well as the plot of the episode, were developed along slightly different lines than their original concept, and rather than being revised to fit the new guidelines, this scene was eliminated from production. You will notice, for example, that originally Kanin was written as the tunnel toymaker!

The scene was written to takes place at the beginning of the episode “A Gentle Rain.” At that time the episode's title was “Above this Scepter'd Sway,” a phrase which can be found within the same quotation from Shakespeare's “The Merchant of Venice” which yielded the final title. ~ You might enjoy seeing how perfectly the quotation suits this episode's theme.

The quality of mercy is not strained,
It dropeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blessed;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
&n ‘us mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,

But mercy is above this scepter'd sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,

Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy,
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy.

The scene is truly a gift for it shows what might have been had someone with Linda's sensitivity, understanding, creativity, and talent been the writer of many, many more episodes of B&B.
