Where Everything Shimmers and Floats
Caryl Traugott
 1990

Please tell me of magical places,
 where "everything shimmers and floats."
 of subterranean waterfalls,
 or castles encircled by moats.
Show me the top of a tower
so tall I can seize just one star,
 or describe a crystalline cavern
that glitters with quartz and feldspar.

Your voice is so low and enchanting,
 it speaks of impossible things,
of love without painful sad partings,
 and Pegasus flying with wings.
Won't you please read one final poem
 about soaring seagulls and boats,
which glide on a phosphorus ocean
 where "everything shimmers and floats"?
